Murray Clark wins QLD Superbike Champ with Teknik
The final round of the QLD championships were held at the Morgan Park facility over the Last weekend in September 2010. We travelled up to support long time test rider Murray Clark on the 2006 ZX10 in the Superbike class. Muzz and Teknik go back a few years to 2001 when he was racing an R1 in formula Xtreme and then on to the ARRC. When Muzz called and told us he was leading the Superbike class by 1 point going into the final round and could do with some help it sounded like fun so we packed the van and drove north. The ZX10 has not been at the peak of Superbike competition in the last 10 years. From the company that built the all conquering ZX7 the '10 just didn't live up to it's predeccessors. The 2006 model Muzz owns is an ex TKA (Team Kawasaki) bike that has plenty of power but had some odd handling "refinements". We helped him sort it out late last year by going back to the Ohlins settings bank in the Ohlins 25mm cartridge kit fork and TTX shock. The TTX had a super long yoke that made the shock some 15mm longer than stock. It was a wild ride. In testing we discovered a while ago the chassis of the ZX10 works well as a street bike and does not take kindly to major ride height changes so with the stock shock length being 338mm we only run it 1 - 4mm longer and it works well with the Pirelli tyres. |

The competition was in the form of 2 2008 Yamaha R1's built by Kev Marshall from the Yamaha factory Superbike team and a Paul free built CBR1000RR ridden by Michael McMillan. The rain was coming and going for most of the weekend but we managed to get the most out of the '10 and come away with a QLD Superbike title, not bad for a 4 year old bike and a 45 year old rider. The last round of the Southern Downs series is on in November, Morgan Park and Warwick is such a damn nice place that we are going back. |
