The compression spring around your shock absorber usually has an alignment seat or collar that sits at one end of the main spring with an inner lip sitting up inside the coil. It usually attaches at the bottom onto the spring retaining clip. It does three things: the lip seats the spring concentrically around the damper so that there is an even space between the coils and the body casting meaning no possible rubbing; the ring height can act as a spacer or shim to help set the pre load or adapt shorter springs to longer rear shocks - learn more about coil springs and preload; the flat metal face acts as a washer that distributes spring pressure evenly - making adjustments to the preload nuts much easier and smoother.
Before you get started, read how to replace your motorbike's shock spring in our technical article first, and check out the installation guide we provide with every Teknik Motorcycle Shock Spring. Some OEM coilovers put the hardware at top near the preload nuts so you can also find some spacers in the top preload nuts category, as well as the bottom preload nuts.
Consider matching your shock spring hardware with Suspension Tools for correct fitting and adjustment.
