Motorcycle Shock Seal Case Top Out Bump Stops

Motorbike rear shocks use a damping shaft that slides inside the main shock absorber body. To keep all the oil & nitrogen pressure held inside that casing there is a lower seal head assembly between the two.

Dampers have multiple defences in there - an oil seal deep inside, a dust wiper on the outside, a rod bushing to keep it sliding concentrically, a rubber o-ring sealing the outer & a rebound topout bumper facing inwards.

These internal reb bump stops can either be a rubber ring or a small steel coil spring. It absorbs force and makes sure no damage happens if the shock piston bumps into the bottom casing - something that happens when shocks have no weight on them and reach full extension - like when you jump the bike.

Top out stoppers have a hard time living deep inside shock body cases since they often get neglected during servicing, but we have genuine factory replacement parts for KYB and Showa motorcycle suspensions. Make sure you aren't gunking up your shock with disintegrating rubber, or worse still, parts of a snapped spring smashing around delicate internals.

To service the coilover end case you will need to remove the shock spring, so read our article on how to do it safely. It's a perfect opportunity to swap springs to the right spring rate for your weight too.
And once everything is rebuilt, keep in mind our suspension fluids section to refill the oil, and our regassing tools to gas it up.
