Motorcycle Fork Compression Adjuster Parts

 

Adjustable motorbike front forks usually have clickers on the top cap. If your bike has a modern "Separate Function Fork", you probably have comp adjustment on one cap and reb on the other, but for older designs both top caps have compression damping adjusters.

These adjuster assemblies are compact but quite complex, each top cap has a clicker assembly and a bleed screw, sealed against the tube with an o-ring. A centre shaft is screwed underneath with a free piston sliding up and down it, with inner and outer seals and bushes to prevent oil getting past. An Inner Chamber Spring presses between the top cap and this sliding piston - helping set the initial fork plushness - so changing how strong the ICS is will make the forks feel softer or firmer at the beginning of the stroke. At the end of the center rod are the compression piston parts - a very specific set of shims and washers assembled either side of a piston and locked onto a base valve "tower" with a locknut. A pushrod slides inside the centre shaft, pressing harder or softer on the comp piston depending on your clicker adjustments, and compressing or loosening the stack.
