About WP Genuine Parts

In 1977, WP Suspension was founded by Wim Peters in the Netherlands. Peters was an enthusiastic racer & mechanical engineer, always working on his motorcycle's suspension. He sustained a heavy fall in 1975, having to spend more than a year recuperating, which gave him plenty of time to work out his vision for off-road forks & shocks. He developed his own suspension including coil springs from special spring steel. The bare-metal springs had to be protected, so Wim looked to a close-by company that lacquered hospital beds. They could arrange painting for a good price, but only had white in stock, that colour leading to the name of his new company "White Power Suspension" - absolutely nothing to do with politics folks.

Peters' suspension worked so spectacularly well that his fellow motocrossers soon wanted a similar suspension on their motorbikes. Dutch racers like Gerrit Wolsink (“The Flying Dentist”), Kees van der Ven, Dave Strijbos & John van den Berk were celebrating one title after another with WP Suspension on their bikes. A flying start, but the big breakthrough arrived in 1983 when KTM started fitting them as the standard suspension in their off-road bikes. In that same year WP was the first company in the world to present the upside-down front fork. Now a technological standard, in 1983 upside down forks were a novelty. The fork was first mounted on the 500cc KTM two-stroke. KTM readied 750 of these bikes to be sold in 1984. This amount quickly rose to 1750 bikes in that same year. The bike’s unexpected popularity was influenced substantially by its fantastic damping. WP's first Motocross World Championship title was won in 1984 (by Heinz Kinigadner on a KTM). More than 200 rider & team world championships would follow, conquered with their high-end suspensions.

In the following years WP Suspension continued to grow, branching out from off-road motorcycles, and branched out into other road & motorsports directions. Racers like Toni Mand & Valentino Rossi have raced on WP fork legs & shock absorbers. WP has been KTM's sole supplier for decades, but several other brands have fitted their dampers too, such as BMW & Husaberg. They were the first motorbike suspension company to introduce electronic suspension in aftermarket (EDSI) & OE (ESAI & ESAII) form in 2005. A couple of years later WP Suspension moved closer to KTM's Austrian motorcycle plant where they remain, closing it's original Dutch manufacturing.

Their lightweight & simple PDS shocks were either loved or hated - but they definitely weren't a copy of KYB or Showa. WP is one of the few big players willing to do things their own way.
