Are you serious about offroad riding? You should be servicing your bike regularly, especially suspension - fluids & grease break down, bushings & seals wear. Don't forget your shock linkage bearings too. But when it's freshly rebuilt & the damping is perfectly tuned, you still need to think about your spring preload.

Modern motocross setup is based on the dirtbike sitting at a particular height & posture with the rider mounted, regardless of rider weight. Adventure motorbikes need fine balance & ground clearance for rough tracks too. You need to measure the rider sag & adjust the pre-load collars to get it just right. In some cases you may need heavier or softer springs determined by looking at your static sag measurement once your rider sag is set. But what if you're by yourself? Want to check every ride? Remember, as springs & internals break in the sag will change, plus your body weight & fuel level varies during a day - especially during long enduros. Want to adjust for different conditions?
